The ProductsGPS Waypoint Upload
GPSWPUpload V1.1 transfers waypoints from the Admiralty RYA Chart Plotter to
a Garmin GPS and vice versa. This utility allows you to change the way you
work with waypoints. You can now generate waypoints using the graphical facility
of the Admiralty RYA plotter then upload those waypoints to the GPS. You no longer
have to rely totally on the plotter, previously if it failed your waypoints
were lost, but can now use the GPS as a failsafe. It is also incredibly easier
and far less error prone to create your waypoints graphically than type them
laboriously by hand into the GPS.
CryptAFileCryptAFile very simply makes the contents of any computer file impossible for anyone other than the holder of the key to access. It uses an industry standard, uncrackable cypher, triple-DES which treats each file as data and mangles it three times to produce 168 bit security. There's a good chance that the last time you sent data over the internet it was encrypted by 3-DES. Hop to it... NetXPasswordsMaybe it's paranoia but storing all the passwords, log-on codes, credit card details, bank account details and so on on one computer deep in a browser is not a solution we are happy with. What's more, we have a number of computers, including a laptop which travels around with us, so we want a mobile strong-box. NetXPasswords provides a secure, mobile and personal repository for all those details which lives on a memory stick. The data is secured with the same algorithm that CryptAFile uses, 3-DES. It can't be cracked! Hop to it... Stepping StonesStepping Stones is just plain brilliant! OK we're biassed, but we, the jaundiced software writers, have spent so much time simply playing this game it must be good, and we think it's just the thing to entertain adults and children alike when you're stuck in a port, or trapped in a caravan in bad weather, or just a superb bit of mildly competitive fun at a party, pub or at Christmas. You get a lot for your Pocket Money with this one, about six variations of the basic game. Hop to it... BingoAnother game for bored boaties Bingo is a simple piece of software that scrambles a list of data and presents it on the screen. It essentially does what a bingo machine does and thus got its name. It comes with a file of bingo numbers and rhyming slang, so you can while away boring hours by playing old fashioned bingo (though you'll have to make your own cards) or use it as initially intended as an educational tool to test and reinforce your kids knowledge. You can write your own files or buy UK curriculum files from TeachersHaven. Hop to it... Wind RepeaterIf you have a deck house cruiser with only an external wind instrument, or if you simply like to know what's going on when you're down below, you might find this bit of software to your liking. Using the NMEA signal from your primary wind instrument it graphically displays on your computer screen a "virtual instrument" giving wind speed and direction. Hop to it... Freebee RomanWhat's the smallest number that will use all of the Roman numerals (MDCLXVI) and the smallest that will use them in order? Here's a little freebee to get you interested. It converts Roman to Arab numerals and back. That's all the explanation you'll need so help yourself, Download Roman here.... |

CryptAFile
From time to time most of us want to keep information on our
computers private - this may be course files, your will, industrial secrets and
exam papers, and so on; you may want to
protect your work against copyright fraud or plagerism. Security
is particularly important in an environment where computers are shared, such as
occurs in schools and colleges, and at home.
Often this is accomplished only by copying sensitive files onto removable media and physically protecting the media. CryptAFile gets you away from the hassle of removable media and CDs by providing a fast and simple to use interface to an industry standard encryption engine; in fact, the encryption technique is the same as is used to encrypt data for transmission over the Web. CryptAFile also lets you send hard-encrypted data attached to emails. Just use it to encrypt a file then attach the file to an email and send it. To do this both sender and recipient need the software and agree on a key. CryptAFile encrypts any format of computer file be it text, spreadsheet, presentation, data, pictures, programs, hypertext etc., and decrypts as easily. It is simplicity itself to use (one of the benefits of having a professional write software is that he does not get seduced by fancy techniques, graphics and windows!). The opening window asks whether you want to hide your encryption key - do this if someone is looking over your shoulder. Then you are presented with a window with a textbox and two buttons. Enter your key in the textbox, select encrypt to encrypt a file, or decrypt to decrypt a file, and click. The job's done. The other button is to quit when you've encrypted all the files you want. Simple!
We want you to be happy with CryptAFile, so a word of caution:
choose a key that is a sentence rather than a word
(long is good) and choose something memorable if you forget your key the data
is completely lost (no-one repeat, no-one can get it back for you, the
whole point is: this cipher is unbreakable without the key!).
CryptAFile comes with a good Help suite, not that you'll need it. The price for CryptAFile by download is just £5. It has been tested on Windows® 98 SE and XP SR2 and Vista. It requires the Microsoft dotNet framework version 1.1 and will install it, if necessary, during setup. Download CryptAFile | Go back | Top of page | Previous | Next | Home |

NetXPasswords
With the advent of internet commerce and banking came a proliferation
of passwords, memorable data, user ids, account numbers, security codes,
and logon details; and with that came the issue of remembering or
storing the information securely. Browsers come with a facility
which offers to do this for you for any particular website, however,
this (a) relies on the writer of the browser to provide a secure
means of storage and, (b) does not prevent anyone using your computer
from having the same access to your details as you do.
The program was originally intended to foil keystroke capture programs that reside in the background of a computer, and send details of your keystrokes to malevolent hackers who could then use your details for themselves. These days that threat is taken care of by free programs such as you can get from AVG. However, during the development of the program it became abundantly clear that having the facility to store all that data and recall it at the click of a mouse, then enter it into the correct textbox with any of the paste commands (such as ctrl+V) was a really useful facility anyway. Added to that the ability to have any number of encrypted datafiles, each with its own passkey, allows any number of users to have their own encrypted data securely stored on the same computer, or on their personal memory sticks in their pockets. So family, colleagues, any users who share a computer can benefit from their own secure datafile. NetXPasswords takes all your private details and stores them under the immense security of 3-DES. You need to provide a passkey of your choice, which the program uses to encrypt and decrypt the data. The passkey should be a phrase that is easy for you to remember and difficult for others to guess. Things like "The Mull of Kintyre", "Saint bArNaBies church organ", and so on are better than "1456" or "ssJU7NNyHH" because you will either forget the numbers or write down the string; and yes, it is case sensitive. 3-DES cannot be unlocked if you lose your passkey (please read that sentence twice). It is so secure that if you lose your key neither you, nor we, nor anyone else can get your data back (this is true even if one single character of the key is wrong) so choose something easy to remember and to get right.
NetXPasswords can be configured to stay on top of your windows,
but can be shrunk to a small icon so as not to be obtrusive. It comes with a comprehensive
Help suite, as you would expect with professionally written software.
It guides you through the process of entering data, retrieving the
individual entry you need, making changes, and deleting data. Also
installed is a guide to get you started which is best read before you
first use NetXPasswords.
The price for NetXPasswords by download is just £9.99. It has been tested on Windows® 98 SE and XP SR2 and Vista. It requires the Microsoft dotNet framework version 1.1 and will install it, if necessary, during setup. Download NetXPasswords | Go back | Top of page | Previous | Next | Home |

Stepping Stones
It all began when a request came in from our sister company, Teachers Haven,
for a Blockbuster style game to use in the classroom, or by a tutor,
as a teaching aid. So we agreed a spec and started writing the code. It soon
outgrew the original idea, however.
The basic game is for two teams (or individuals) who must navigate the board by answering questions to claim board squares or "stones". One team moves top to bottom and one from side to side. That's the basic game and it's embedded in stepping stones. But as things developed we found that we could add exciting new features that were never dreamed of in the days of the original Blockbusters® television program, we could, for example, joggle the stepping stones at any time so that gaps would open in the sequence of stones (like pack ice drifting apart) making it far more difficult for the players and requiring much more strategic thinking on their part. Even more dastardly you can elect to have the stones joggle themselves randomly as play progresses. This is fascinating. A player who thinks he's home and dry can suddenly find his path has cracked open in front of him! But also, a player who is totally surrounded can find a path has just been unexpectedly made for him; the stones are as likely to joggle together as apart. Normally, a contestant who is winning keeps control of the board, but there is a variation that requires contestants move alternately and again, the strategy required is different from the basic game. And this then developed into a game with no questions to be answered - just a game of pure strategy on a par with a good game of draughts (chequers).
Stepping Stones is governed by a quizmaster who makes many of the decisions about the play, and who has a series of controls to help her, but it's quite feasible for one of the players to perform this role (unless you use it for a pub quiz, in which case it might get heated!). We've suggested some games and rules in the Help suite, but you will probably find exciting variations, just as we did. The price for Stepping Stones by download is just £9.99. It has been tested on Windows® 98 SE, 2000 and XP SR2 and Vista but should work on every Windows flavour. This one does not require the dotNet framework and comes with some goodies: a general knowledge question and answer file of over a hundred questions, and a program to help you write your own files. If you want it for school, or as a marvelous tutoring aid to help support your kids, why not buy curriculum based files from TeachersHaven? Wind Repeater
Many people these days employ laptops on their craft to provide functions
such as chart plotting. The growth of chart plotting programs such as the
RYA/Admiralty chart plotter, the Maptech and similar offerings, and GPSU all
testify to that fact. On our own boat, a Moody Eclipse, we use a general purpose,
modern laptop as a chart plotter running the RYA software fed by a Garmin 152.
Our Eclipse is a deck cabin yacht and has two steering positions. Whether the
idea of sailing while steering from the inside position is something the designers
thought no self-respecting yachtsman would ever attempt, or whether it was
simply too difficult to include one, an internal wind instrument was not a
standard fit, so invention followed necessity ...
Wind Repeater faithfully decodes the NMEA wind sentences output by your primary wind instrument. It decodes $..MWV, $..VWR or $..VWT sentences and displays either a true or apparent graphical display depending on the signal and your selection. The display is configured to sit on top of whatever other program you are running, such as a chart plotter, but if it gets in the way it can be shrunk and moved into a corner where it will still give you data but in a smaller format.
The NMEA data link from the primary wind instrument must be connected to one of the computer's serial ports (or via an RS232/USB serial adaptor). If you are using a GPS to feed a plotter program it is likely that one of the ports is already taken with the GPS link; simply use another port for the wind data and use the program to find the correct one. In fact there are a whole bundle of tools provided to make the interfacing between virtual and real instruments easy. You can change ports, check the incoming sentences, change the polling period - or you can leave all this to the defaults, whichever you choose.
It can also record the incoming data at a rate determined by you for later analysis, while other menu items allow you to change speed units, scale the wind vector, and swap between large and small displays. The price for Wind Repeater by download is £9.99. It has been tested on Windows® 98 SE and XP SR2 and Vista. It requires the Microsoft dotNet framework version 1.1 and will install it, if necessary, during setup. Download Wind Repeater | Go back | Top of page | Previous | Next | Home |

GPS Waypoint Upload Version 1.1Create your waypoints using the list or graphical features of the Admiralty RYA plotter, then upload them to your Garmin GPS. The ease with which this can be done using GPSWPUpload will change the entire way you work with your electronic navigation equipment.
This software really does make life easier and fills a gap in the Admiralty RYA plotter system. GPSWPUpload is simple to use. If you accept the default file from the plotter uploading waypoints from plotter to GPS is a matter of a few mouse clicks: select whether you want individual control or upload all WPs, click 'Upload', select the file; that's it. Alternatively, downloading from the GPS is even easier. This utility will enable you to display all the waypoints from your GPS on charts on the plotter and verify their accuracy. GPSWPUpload works with the Garmin protocol at the standard transfer rate of 9600bps. This makes interfacing with the Garmin a doddle, but if you have another make of GPS the program may not work (but please contact us). We cannot provide a 'try before you buy' copy in this case, but with a price of just a fiver (£5) for whole new way of working we think you will be happy. STOP PRESS:The 2009 version of the plotter puts the Waypoint.wpt file in this folder: C:/Documents and settings/all users/application data/UKHORYA/waypoints.wpt not the one described in the Quickstart Guide and Help Download GPSWPUpload | Go back | Top of page | Previous | Next | Home |
